Meet Coach G.
Thomasina “Coach G” Gatson always knew the play for her life involved basketball and coaching players of the future. The squeak of sneakers against hardwood floors is the soundtrack to her life. Her sneakers have graced every court in her career, from middle school to collegiate to professional. Basketball has always been a haven for her, a defense of peace against chaos. Coach G has dribbled past distractions for the past twenty-nine years to reach her personal improvement and student-athlete development goals. Her passion for health and our youth has led her to open her sports performance academy, Gatson’s Fitness & Sports Academy, to teach the game of basketball and help students secure funds for college.

My Story
I have experienced and trained every level of basketball from youth to young adults, from elementary to collegiate. Additionally, I attended college on a basketball scholarship, playing at San Jacinto College North- Houston for two years and the finishing up my last two years at Lamar University-Beaumont. To continue my love and talent for the game I was part of the inaugural WNBA era, where I took part in several tryouts and ended by playing semi-pro for the Brenham Glory here in Texas.
I have earned an Associates of Arts in Physical Education while playing for San Jacinto College North. I earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree while playing for Lamar University -Beaumont. After becoming a teacher and coach I went on to pursue my Masters in Educational Administration. However, as a sports specific trainer, I earned my Masters in Business Administration, and with the era of sports world changing every day I felt it necessary to earn a Masters of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration along with my certification as a Registered Athletic Administration. I am currently a doctoral candidate at Concordia University Irvine. My vision and passion for basketball has no limits when it comes to increasing my knowledge and expertise about the game; or any sport for that matter. Consequently in 2022, I wrote a book, “Huddle Up” A coach’s playbook to program success, to share my passion. With that impact, I joined the Advisory Council for the Future Coaches of Texas Association through the Texas A & M Coaching Academy.
As an educator of physical education and health, I have an undeniable passion to assist our students and student-athletes to embrace the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. I currently reside on the Board of Directors for Texas Association of Physical Education, Health, Recreation and Dance as President- Elect. Prior to this past year election, I was a two- term Vice President of the Health Division. I have served as Physical Education and Health Department Chair, Senior Class Sponsor and Ninth grade team leader, and part of the district curriculum writing team for physical education and health. I am the current President-Elect for TAHPERD.
